Teen Volunteers @ the Library

Due to COVID-19, we are not currently accepting volunteers or supervising volunteer hours.

Please note: Adults interested in volunteering at the Library may visit the Friends of the Pembroke Public Library page.

Looking for a great way to contribute to your community, share your skills and talents, impress colleges and future employers, and/or get community service hours for graduation?

Pembroke Public Library wants to help you help us! We are looking for teens (Grades 7-12) to help in a variety of ways:
  • Craft Preparation
  • Organizing Materials
  • Cleaning/Organizing the Library
  • Assistance with Children's Programs
  • Citizen Science/Micro-Volunteering (these are special, digital projects that can be discussed with the librarian)
    • We support collaborative work and research!  You can help contribute to discoveries and projects in many fields including science, history, and the humanities. Visit Zooniverse to peek at some of the available opportunities.
  • Other? If you're interested in volunteering or collaborating in a different manner as part of a project for another organization (National Honors Society, Boy Scouts of America, etc.), please discuss this with the Youth Services Librarian, Miss Melissa McCleary, via mmccleary[at]sailsinc.org.

Please visit the Library to pick up a Student Volunteer Form or print the form* below.

Shelf-Reading Practice

Illustrated owl with red and blue feathers stands on a pile of books.
One area for which the Library will consistently need volunteers is shelf-reading.  Shelf reading is the art of reading the books' labels on the shelf to ensure they are in the proper order and place.  If a book is even a few books away from its proper place, a patron may not be able to find it!

To introduce yourself to shelf reading, please take this basic Shelver quiz.  There are two portions: Fiction and Dewey (Nonfiction).

More expert shelf readers can try "Order in the Library" with more intense levels of sorting and reordering digital shelves.
